QuickSnap DSS Compatible Format v4
Introduction
QuickSnap DSS Compatible Format v4 is a comprehensive file format which contains all the data items required to arrive at any AN-SNAP class in the AN-SNAP v4 Classification.
It uses codesets from the DSS/DRS definitions, but also includes items which are not part of those collections in order to make it capable of arriving at any AN-SNAP v4 class.
It is a CSV file format, and the data items and code sets are described below.
Using this file format will allow you to group both Overnight and Ambulatory (Same Day, Community and Outpatient) Episodes (and Palliative Care phases).
Items used in this format
- DSS/DRS compatible code sets, which are described below. Please note that the 'native' AN-SNAP code sets are not the same as IPHA's DSS/DRS code sets, despite containing the similar 'labels'.
- Individual FIM Items which enable the calculation of 'Weighted FIM Motor' as used in the Admitted Rehabilitation classes for AN-SNAP v4.
- Individual HoNOS Items, and derives HoNOS Total, HoNOS Overactive Behaviour and HoNOS ADL values.
- DRS Palliative Care Linking Key: this item enables QuickSnap to derive ‘Flag: First Phase in Episode’ but relies on assumptions listed below.
- DRS Diagnosis Array: this item enables QuickSnap to derive ‘Flag: Delirium or Dementia’. The item must be supplied in exactly the format described specification referenced (ABF_APC_Specifications_2015-16 – APC data specs, Item 44)
- Items which are not part of the DSS/DRS data collections: AN-SNAP Rehab Program Type, GEM Clinic Type. These items are only required for grouping of Non-Admitted episodes, Admitted episodes are able to be grouped using only items from existing collections.
Assumptions; pre-sorting records for grouping of Palliative Care Phases
In order to derive ‘Flag: First Phase in Episode’ SnapGrouper relies on the following assumptions for any given file submitted to SnapGrouper:
- ALL Phases are included for each Episode whose Phases are represented in the file.
- DRS Palliative Care Linking Key is unique for each Episode whose Phases are represented in the file.
- The submitted file is pre-sorted by the following data items, with this priority:
- Palliative Care Linking Key
- Episode Start Date
- Phase Start Date
- Episode End Date
If these assumptions are not met, QuickSnap will not be able to correctly determine the value of ‘Flag: First Phase in Episode’ and this will result in potentially incorrect grouping for Unstable phases, where the grouping specification relies on this flag.
Sample Files
Here are some examples of the QuickSnap DSS Compatible v4 file format:
- Excel Template: QuickSnap_DSS_Compatible_V4_template.xlsx - this file contains a header row and is in Excel format - QuickSnap cannot process this file but it displays the column headers for each data item
- CSV Sample: QuickSnap_DSS_Compatible_V4.csv- this is a sample CSV file - QuickSnap will be able to process this file

Notes and Assumptions
- Impairment Code is the AROC v4 Impairment Code, as specified in this document: AROCv4 Impairment Codes.pdf
- Age will be derived by the following calculation:
- Age = Episode Admission Date – Date of Birth
- Age Type: is the primary determiner of Adult/Paediatric classification for Palliative Care and Rehabilitation:
- If Age Type = 9 (Not Specified): Age will be used to determine Age Type
- If Age Type = 1 (Paediatric): Age will be validated, Age must be <= 19
- If Age Type = 2 (Adult): Age will be validated, Age must be >= 16
- Length of stay will be derived by the following logic/calculation:
- If [Episode Admission Date] = [Episode Discharge Date]
- Length of Stay = 1
- Else
- Length of Stay = [Episode Discharge Date] – [Episode Admission Date] – [Leave Days]
- Different Code Sets: The following data items use different code sets to the native QuickSnap Native Format. QuickSnap will accept the DSS/DRS Code Set and map to the relevant AN-SNAP Code Set as outlined in the tables below:
- DSS Care Type
- DSS clinical assessment only indicator
- DRS Palliative Care Phase Type
Note there is some ambiguity about calculation of ‘Length of Stay’ for palliative care phases, however Length of Stay is not actually used for grouping of palliative care so this does not present a problem for the grouper
Derived Items used in AN-SNAP grouping
- Long Term Care: Long Term Care is true if 'Length of Stay' >= 92 days
SNAP Code Sets
DSS Care Type
Value | Description | AN-SNAP Case Type Mapping |
2 | Rehabilitation Care | Rehabilitation (2) |
3 | Palliative Care | Palliative Care (1) |
4 | Geriatric Evaluation and Management | GEM (4) |
5 | Psychogeriatric Care | Psychogeriatric (3) |
6 | Maintenance Care | Non-Acute (5) |
AN-SNAP Episode Type
Value | Description |
1 | Overnight |
2 | Same Day |
3 | Outpatient |
4 | Community |
DSS clinical assessment only indicator
Value | Description | AN-SNAP Assessment Only Mapping |
1 | Yes | Yes (1) |
2 | No | No (0) |
3 | Unknown | Unknown |
9 | Not Stated | Unknown |
Because 3 and 9 map to ‘Unknown’ these values will result in grouping errors for Case Type/Episode Type combinations which require the ‘Assessment Only’ flag.
DRS Palliative Care Phase Type
Value | Description | AN-SNAP Phase Type Mapping |
1 | Stable | Stable (1) |
2 | Unstable | Unstable (2) |
3 | Deteriorating | Deteriorating (3) |
4 | Terminal | Terminal (4) |
9 | Not reported | Unknown |
Because 9 maps to ‘Unknown’, records with this value will result in grouping errors for Case Type/Episode Type combinations which require Phase Type (almost all Palliative Care episodes)
AN-SNAP Focus of Care
Value | Description |
1 | Acute |
2 | Not Acute |
